Milne Bay Province
Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea
Milne Bay Province is the southeasternmost maritime province of Papua New Guinea, covering both the tip of the Papuan Peninsula and a vast scatter of islands in the Coral and Solomon Seas.
It stretches over about 14,000 square kilometers of land and more than 250,000 square kilometers of sea, with over 600 islands—about 160 of them inhabited—and dozens of smaller cays and atolls. The provincial capital is Alotau, a small town on the shores of Milne Bay that serves as the main gateway to the area’s diving sites, World War II history, and island communities.
The province is known for its rich marine environment and coral reefs, which attract divers and snorkelers, as well as for its diverse cultures and languages spoken across the mainland and island groups such as the Trobriands, D’Entrecasteaux, Woodlark, and Louisiade Archipelago.
