Muralla Romana de Lugo
Lugo, Spain, Spain
Muralla Romana de Lugo encircles the historic center of Lugo in Galicia, Spain, as the world's finest and only fully intact Roman city wall, constructed between 263-276 AD to protect Lucus Augusti from barbarian invasions with a 2,120-meter perimeter enclosing 34 hectares.
Built from slate slabs, granite reinforcements, and internal earth mortar fill reaching up to 12 meters high and 4-7 meters thick, it features 71 of its original 85 semi-circular and rectangular towers spaced 8-18 meters apart, plus five original gates expanded to ten over time, forming a defensive complex with a moat and intervallum walkway.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000, this late Roman engineering marvel integrates seamlessly into modern urban life with walkable battlements offering panoramic views, symbolizing Lugo's enduring classical legacy amid its medieval and Jacobean heritage.
