The Museum of Black Civilisations in Dakar is one of Africa’s most important cultural institutions, dedicated to celebrating the history, achievements, and diversity of Black civilizations across Africa and the global diaspora.

Opened in 2018, the museum was inspired by a vision first proposed by Léopold Sédar Senghor, Senegal’s first president, to highlight Africa’s contributions to world culture, science, and history. Housed in a striking modern building inspired by traditional African architecture, the museum features collections ranging from prehistoric artifacts and historical objects to contemporary art.

Its exhibitions explore themes such as African civilizations, cultural traditions, the African diaspora, and the role of Black peoples in shaping global society. More than a museum, the Museum of Black Civilisations serves as a center for education, cultural exchange, and reflection on African heritage. It has become a major landmark in Dakar and an important symbol of pride, identity, and the preservation of Black history and culture.
