Palacio Salvo
Montevideo, Uruguay
Palacio Salvo in Montevideo, Uruguay, was designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti and completed in 1928. At 105 meters tall with 27 stories, it was the tallest building in Latin America for a brief period and a reinforced concrete architectural milestone.
The building features a striking eclectic style blending Art Deco, Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements, culminating in a distinctive silhouette that has become an emblem of Montevideo's early 20th-century prosperity. Originally intended as a hotel, it now contains offices, private residences, commercial spaces, and the Tango Museum, which honors Uruguay's famous tango heritage.
Located at Plaza Independencia, it stands on land once home to the café where the iconic tango "La Cumparsita" was first played. Palacio Salvo remains a cultural and architectural landmark symbolizing Montevideo’s rich history and vibrant culture.
