Pierrefonds
Hauts-de-France, France
Château de Pierrefonds, located in the Hauts-de-France region of France near Compiègne, is a striking Gothic castle originally built in the 12th century and extensively rebuilt between 1393 and 1407 by Louis d'Orléans, brother of King Charles VI, as a fortified stronghold during the Hundred Years' War.
Dismantled in 1617 on orders from Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu to curb noble rebellions, it lay in picturesque ruins for over two centuries until Napoleon III commissioned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1857 for a grand 19th-century restoration that reimagined it as an idealized medieval palace with elaborate towers, moats, and decorative elements.
Today, managed as a historic monument, it attracts visitors with its fairy-tale architecture, interiors blending medieval and Romantic styles, and scenic forest surroundings, serving as a popular site for tourism and occasional film locations.
