Plaza Independencia
Montevideo, Uruguay
Plaza Independencia is the most important and historic square in Montevideo, Uruguay, created in the 19th century on the site of the old colonial citadel.
It marks the transition between the old town, Ciudad Vieja, and the newer parts of the city. At its center stands a grand 17-meter bronze statue of General José Gervasio Artigas, a national hero, with his mausoleum located underground beneath the plaza where an honor guard keeps vigil.
The square is surrounded by significant landmarks, including the Palacio Salvo, the former Estévez Palace now housing government offices, and the iconic Solís Theatre. A stone gateway known as the Puerta de la Ciudadela, a remnant of the demolished fortress, frames one side of the plaza. Plaza Independencia serves as a cultural, political, and social hub, hosting ceremonies and drawing locals and tourists alike to admire its architecture, monuments, and rich national heritage.
