Raseborg Castle Ruins
Raseborg, Finland
Raseborg Castle in Finland was built in the 1370s as an administrative center for Western Uusimaa and served as a military and commercial stronghold guarding the Gulf of Finland.
Originally constructed on a rock surrounded by the sea, it featured a capital "D" shaped layout with thick walls, a donjon tower, and outer defensive structures, including wooden barriers protecting the castle harbor. It played a significant role in defending Swedish interests against rivals like the Hanseatic city of Tallinn.
The castle's importance declined when the sea receded due to geological uplift and with the founding of Helsinki in 1550, leading to its abandonment by 1558. After lying deserted for over 300 years, restoration began in the 1880s. Today, the ruins are open to the public during summer and host cultural events such as medieval markets and performances, drawing visitors interested in history and architecture.
