Šaris castle
Veľký Šariš, Slovakia, Slovakia
Šariš Castle above Veľký Šariš in eastern Slovakia is one of the country's largest medieval fortresses, with settlement traces from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, evolving into a Slavic stronghold during Great Moravia before a stone royal castle arose around the early 13th century as the Šariš county seat. Destroyed by Mongols in 1241 and rebuilt mid-century under King Béla IV, it endured sieges by Charles I in 1312-1314, Jan Jiskra's forces in 1441, and Habsburg troops in 1537, expanding with Gothic walls, 13 towers, bastions, a donjon, and Renaissance courtyards housing over 200 people. A 1660 gunpowder explosion and 1687 fire led to its abandonment, leaving extensive ruins—including a cylindrical tower and circuits—popular for hikes today.
