Sercy
Eastern France, France
Château de Sercy is a well-preserved medieval castle located in Eastern France, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region near the village of Sercy.
Originally built in the 12th century and modified in the 15th century, it served as a defensive fortress overseeing the valley of the Grosne river and the nearby Abbey of Cluny.
The castle features a notable round pigeon tower and a high circular tower crowned with a wooden hoarding, one of the oldest in France. It has a Romanesque chapel dating back to the 12th century with a historic painted interior.
The castle was continuously reinforced over centuries, especially during the Hundred Years’ War, adapting to advances in artillery defense. Despite suffering damage during revolutions and fires, it maintains a unique architectural originality and charm, surrounded by old trees and a park.
The site is open to visitors seasonally and offers a glimpse into medieval military architecture and noble life in Burgundy.
