Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is a historic stone and brick fortress that surrounds the center of Suwon city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It was built at the end of the 18th century, from 1794 to 1796, by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. The fortress was designed to provide defense for the city, honor the memory of the king’s father, and support King Jeongjo’s dream of a new, modern city combining political, military, and economic functions.

The fortress stretches for nearly 6 kilometers and follows the natural shape of the land. Its thick walls are lower than those of many other fortresses, but they are made with large stones for extra strength and stability. Four main gates mark the north, south, east, and west entrances. The north gate, Janganmun, and the south gate, Paldalmun, are impressive two-story wooden structures atop stone bases, while the east (Changnyongmun) and west (Hwaseomun) gates have single-story designs.

Throughout the fortress, there are many defensive features. These include observation towers for watching enemy movements, bastions and artillery towers for firing weapons, battlements for archers, and secret gates for launching surprise counterattacks. Platforms for arrow launchers and floodgates over streams are also part of the design. About 48 structures like these were built at regular intervals along the wall.

Hwaseong Fortress represents advanced military architecture for its time. Its construction combined the latest ideas and technology from both East Asia and Europe, thanks to scholars from the School of Practical Learning. Special tools like pulleys and cranes were used to speed up building. The fortress also became the center of Suwon, which was developed as a planned city with roads, markets, and homes inside the walls, supporting both commerce and daily life.
