Svartholm Fortress is a historic sea fortress located on an island just off the coast of Loviisa in southern Finland.

Built between 1749 and 1764 during the period when Finland was part of Sweden, it was designed by Augustin Ehrensvärd to help defend Sweden’s eastern frontier and protect against Russian naval attacks. The fortress formed part of the same coastal defense network as Suomenlinna near Helsinki and served as a military base for the Swedish navy.

In 1808, during the Finnish War, it surrendered to Russian forces, and its military importance gradually declined. Later, much of the fortress was damaged during the Crimean War in 1855. Today, Svartholm Fortress is a restored cultural heritage site known for its impressive stone walls, bastions, and scenic island setting. Visitors can explore its historic ruins, learn about Finland’s maritime history, and enjoy views across the Gulf of Finland.
