Tepelena Castle (Kalaja e Tepelenës), also called Ali Pasha’s Castle, is a large medieval fortress situated just north of the town of Tepelenë in southern Albania, on a hill about 350 meters above sea level that commands views of the town, the Vjosë River, and the surrounding valleys.

Its origins date back to the Byzantine period, with the first defensive tower built in the 7th century, and the site was later mentioned under the Ottomans in 1482 and developed as a strategic stronghold in the 15th and 16th centuries to control movements between Gjirokastër, Përmet, and central Albania.

The castle reached its most famous form in the early 19th century when Ali Pasha of Tepelenë, the powerful Ottoman ruler of the Pashalik of Yanina, rebuilt and expanded it in 1819 into a 4–5 hectare fortress with three main gates and three polygonal towers, using it as his second residence until 1820. The walls are irregular in shape, following the natural contours of the hill, and the three towers are placed at key points to strengthen defense and control of the surrounding approaches.

Today, Tepelena Castle is a protected cultural monument and popular tourist site where visitors can explore the remains of walls, towers, and internal chambers, see the blend of Byzantine and Ottoman architectural influences, and enjoy panoramic views over Tepelenë and the countryside; entry to the castle area is free, and a small number of local residents still live within the fortress, giving parts of it a village-like atmosphere.
