Torre de Isla Canela
Spain, Spain
Torre de Isla Canela is a 16th-century circular watchtower near Ayamonte in Huelva province, Spain, built between 1585 and 1608 as part of King Philip II's coastal defense chain from Gibraltar to Ayamonte against Berber pirates and European corsairs threatening Atlantic trade.
Featuring a truncated conical masonry design with a raised entrance via external stairs, double interior chambers divided by a dome, spiral access to the rooftop sentry box, and preserved marine fauna engravings, it originally guarded the Guadiana River mouth before silting distanced it from the shore by the mid-18th century.
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural monument in 1985 and restored in 2009, it survives in good condition amid the modern Isla Canela resort area.
