The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640 in Turku as the Royal Academy of Åbo under the Swedish Empire, is the oldest and largest academic institution in Finland.

After a devastating fire in Turku in 1827, it was relocated to Helsinki in 1828 and renamed the Imperial Alexander University. The university played a foundational role in the development of Finnish culture, science, and national identity, with faculties and facilities including a botanical garden, observatory, and library established in the 19th century.

It adopted the German Humboldtian model of education emphasizing scientific research and in-depth study. Following Finland's independence in 1917, it was renamed the University of Helsinki. Today, it is a leading research university with a vibrant academic community, dedicated to education, scientific advancement, and fostering international cooperation while deeply rooted in Finnish society and history.
