Vidin Grad
Serbia, Serbia
Vidin Grad is a medieval fortress ruin located in eastern Serbia near the Bulgarian border, perched on a strategic hill overlooking the Danube River and first documented in the 15th century as a defensive outpost amid Ottoman expansion. Built primarily in the late Middle Ages with stone walls, towers, and a compact layout suited for guarding river trade routes against Hungarian and later Austrian incursions, it features remnants of a donjon tower and curtain walls integrated into the rugged terrain. Associated with Serbian Despotate fortifications during conflicts like the Ottoman-Hungarian wars, it fell into ruin after the 16th century but remains a protected archaeological site offering insights into Balkan border defenses.
