Vígľaš Castle
Vígľaš, Slovakia, Slovakia
Vígľaš Castle is a Gothic castle ruin turned luxury hotel overlooking the Slatina River valley near the village of Vígľaš in central Slovakia, first mentioned in 1390 as a royal hunting lodge possibly linked to earlier Slavic fortifications and Templar presence on the site.
Built in the late 14th century amid royal forests near Zvolen, it served kings like Louis I, Sigismund of Luxembourg—who founded the Order of the Dragon there—and Matthias Corvinus, later fortified in the 16th century with bastions and towers against repeated Ottoman sieges that it successfully repelled.
Owned by nobles like the Raskai, Esterházy, and Balassa families, it evolved into a Baroque manor before burning in 1945 during World War II, with modern reconstruction preserving its chapel, walls, and romantic features for visitors today.
