Zrin Castle

Zrin, Croatia, Croatia

---

Zrin Castle is a medieval fortress ruin located above the village of Zrin in central Croatia.

Built in the 13th century, it was originally controlled by the Babonić noble family before being granted in 1347 to the Šubić family, who later adopted the name Zrinski after the castle and made it their ancestral seat. The castle played an important role in defending Croatian lands during the Ottoman wars and was a major stronghold of the influential Zrinski family, one of the most prominent noble dynasties in Croatian history.

It remained under their control until it was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1577. Today, the ruins of Zrin Castle stand as a symbol of Croatia’s medieval heritage and the legacy of the Zrinski family. Perched on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside, the site offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s military, political, and cultural history.
