Zvolen Castle
Zvolen, Slovakia, Slovakia
Zvolen Castle is a well-preserved Gothic residence built between 1360 and 1382 by King Louis I of Hungary in the town of Zvolen, central Slovakia, inspired by Italian city palaces as a hunting lodge near royal forests.
Featuring a rectangular four-wing layout around a courtyard with corner towers, a prominent chapel, and later Renaissance fortifications including bastions and gunports added in the 16th century against Ottoman threats, it hosted kings like Sigismund and Matthias Corvinus.
Reconstructed multiple times up to the Baroque era and restored in the 1960s, it now houses a branch of the Slovak National Gallery displaying old European masters like Rubens alongside a tea room.
