Zvyšky hradu Breznica
Tekovská Breznica, Slovakia, Slovakia
Zvyšky hradu Breznica are the scant ruins of a 13th-century medieval fortress atop Hrádok Hill (445 m) near Tekovská Breznica in central Slovakia's Štiavnické vrchy mountains, likely founded after 1260 by the Archbishop of Esztergom on lands disputed with Svätobeňadice Abbey.
Seized violently in 1311 by powerful lord Matthew III Csák using sapping techniques to undermine its walls, it remained in his hands until 1321 before reverting to the archbishop amid ongoing feuds that damaged it further in 1411, with later occupations by Jan Jiskra's Hussite forces mid-15th century and Polish King Casimir during a 1471 revolt against Matthias Corvinus.
By 1564 reduced to a mere watchpost amid Ottoman threats, locals quarried its stones for village buildings, leaving today only faint wall remnants and a terrain relief visible via hikes on overgrown slopes.
