The Ancient city of Durostorum, later known as Drastar, is the historic fortified core of today’s Silistra on the Danube in northeastern Bulgaria.
It began as a Roman military center and grew into an important city, bishopric, and later a major medieval Bulgarian stronghold. The ruins that remain today show how the settlement changed from a Roman frontier camp into one of the key political and religious centers of medieval Bulgaria.
