Fortress „Tsepina“
Bulgaria, Bulgaria
Fortress “Tsepina” is a medieval fortress and former fortified town in the western Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, near the village of Dorkovo.
Built on a steep hilltop more than 1,100 meters above sea level, it occupied a highly strategic position and became one of the most important strongholds in the region. The site was inhabited from prehistoric times and later developed into a major fortress contested by Bulgarians, Byzantines, and other powers during the Middle Ages.
It was notably associated with Despot Alexius Slav, a powerful local ruler in the early 13th century, before eventually being captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1373 after a long siege. Today, Tsepina survives as an impressive archaeological site with remains of fortress walls, a citadel, churches, and large water reservoirs. Visitors can explore the ruins while enjoying panoramic views of the Rhodope Mountains and learning about Bulgaria’s medieval history.
