Bač Fortress is the oldest and best-preserved medieval stronghold in Serbia's Vojvodina region, located near the town of Bač on a former island in the Mostonga River, originally accessible only by drawbridge. Construction began in 1338-1342 under Hungarian King Charles Robert I atop 9th-century Avar-Slavic fortifications, expanding over two centuries into a trapezoidal layout covering 5,600 square meters with five protruding towers (three circular, two quadrilateral), 12-meter-high brick walls 2.5 meters thick featuring shooting lanes, a 20-meter donjon keep, residential palace, chapel, well, cistern, grain pits, and multi-purpose buildings blending Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance elements. As a key Hungarian rampart against Ottoman invasions, it fell in 1529 post-Mohács, served under Turkish rule with surrounding water-filled trenches, was mined and abandoned in 1704 during Rákóczi's uprising, and now stands as a protected cultural monument hosting events amid panoramic Bačka plains.
