Baghaberd Fortress
Armenia, Armenia
Baghaberd Fortress (also called Baghaberd Castle or the Fortress of Kapan, and sometimes referred to as David Bek’s Castle) is one of the largest and most important medieval fortresses in Armenia, located about 14 kilometers northwest of the city of Kapan in the Syunik Province, on a rocky ridge above the Voghji River near its confluence with the Giratagh (Geghi) River.
The fortress sits at around 1,438 meters above sea level and is built on a triangular promontory with a three-tiered defense system: the first level along the base of the cliff, the second about 150 meters higher, and the third at the summit, protected by double walls with strong towers. Its origins are debated: some scholars date it to pre-Christian times, while others believe it was constructed in the 3rd–4th centuries, and historical sources mention it in connection with the 4th-century war between King Arshak II and the Persian Shah Shapur II, when its walls reportedly resisted invasion.
Baghaberd’s golden age began in the late 10th century when the Kingdom of Syunik (also known as the Bagratid Kingdom) rose; after the neighboring city of Kapan was destroyed by Seljuk Turks in 1103, Baghaberd became the kingdom’s capital and served as a secure refuge where Syunik princes stored their treasures and manuscripts in times of danger.
