The term “Urartu Kingdom Fortress” in Armenia usually refers to the major Urartian fortified cities built by the kings of Urartu, the Iron Age kingdom centered in the Armenian Highlands, with the most famous and best‑preserved example in modern Armenia being the Erebuni Fortress near Yerevan.

Erebuni was established in 782 BC by King Argishti I as a strategic military and administrative base on the northern border of Urartu, built on a triangular plan on the Arin‑Berd hill and surrounded by massive walls up to 10–12 meters high, containing a palace, a temple to the god Khaldi, and other buildings decorated with colorful wall paintings.

The city served as a major economic, political, and cultural center of the Urartu kingdom and is considered the direct origin of the modern capital, since the name “Yerevan” is derived from the name Erebuni, and the official founding date of Yerevan is tied to the construction of this fortress in 782 BC. Another important Urartian fortress complex is the Fortress of Van (Van Citadel), located not in Armenia but just west of present‑day Van in Turkey, overlooking the ancient capital Tushpa; it is the largest and most iconic Urartian fortification, built between the 9th and 7th centuries BC and successively used by many later powers.

Together, these sites show how Urartu was known as a “fortress kingdom,” with massive stone citadels cut into hillsides and used as centers of power, trade, and defense, and the Erebuni site in Armenia remains the most accessible and complete example for visitors today.
