Old Halidzor
Armenia, Armenia
“Old Halidzor” mainly refers to a family-run hotel and restaurant complex located in the village of Halidzor in the Syunik Province of Armenia, near the historic Vorotan River gorge and about 5–6 kilometers from the Tatev Monastery and the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway.
The complex opened in 2013 as a restaurant specializing in Armenian cuisine, including regional dishes from Syunik, and later added nine simple but comfortable wooden cabins for overnight guests in 2016, with private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and rates that are affordable for most visitors. It is known for its large terrace overlooking the river and surrounding hills, a garden area with a barbecue, and a welcoming atmosphere that has made it a popular stop for travelers coming to see Tatev and the abandoned medieval cave villages of the Vorotan gorge.
The name “Halidzor” itself comes from older settlements called Halle and Halis and the village is situated on the left bank of the Vorotan River at around 1,300–1,350 meters above sea level, while the historic Halidzor Fortress on the opposite bank of the Voghji River is a separate, much older site associated with David Bek and the 17th–18th century Armenian resistance. Old Halidzor is located on the main road between Kapan and Goris and is easily reachable from Goris (about 20–25 kilometers) or by bus from Yerevan towards Goris followed by a short taxi ride.
