Bellapais Abbey is a remarkable 13th-century Gothic monastery located near the village of Bellapais, close to Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus. Founded around 1205 by Augustinian monks who fled Jerusalem during the Crusades, it was established on land granted by the Lusignan kings of Cyprus.

The abbey is celebrated as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean, featuring characteristic elements such as pointed arches, ribbed vaults, intricate stone carvings, and a striking rose window from the 14th century. The complex includes a church, cloisters with elegant arches, a refectory, and living quarters arranged around a peaceful courtyard.

Over the centuries, the abbey underwent expansions and additions under Lusignan rule and experienced various political changes, including raids and shifts in religious authority. Despite periods of neglect, especially after the Ottoman conquest, the abbey's church continued to serve as a parish for the local village.

The British later used parts of it for military purposes, but restoration efforts in the 20th century helped preserve its structure. Today, Bellapais Abbey is not only a historical monument but also a cultural venue hosting concerts and exhibitions. Its serene gardens, masterful craftsmanship, and breathtaking views of the surrounding Kyrenia mountains make it a treasured site for visitors interested in history, architecture, and Mediterranean heritage.
