Blankaart Castle
Diksmuide, Belgium, Belgium
Blankaart Castle, known in Dutch as Blankaartkasteel, is a castle in Woumen, a village that belongs to the municipality of Diksmuide in West Flanders, Belgium, located at Iepersteenweg 54–58.
The name Blankaart is linked to the nearby low‑lying floodplain of the Yser river, where excessive rain can cause the fields to become “blank” with water, and the castle itself now houses the provincial visitor centre for the De Blankaart nature reserve, which includes the large Blankaart pond, reed marshes and surrounding meadows that are important for birds and other wetland species.
The current building is an eclectic castle dating from the 1920s, constructed after the earlier structure was destroyed during the First World War, and it is set in a park of about ten hectares with a small icehouse and a wrought‑iron arched bridge, giving the estate a picturesque, almost storybook appearance.
