Bloemfontein, known as the "City of Roses," was founded in 1846 as a British fort and later became the capital of the Orange Free State, a Boer republic.

It grew steadily due to diamond discoveries nearby and became an important administrative and judicial center when it was named the judicial capital of the Union of South Africa in 1910. The city played key roles in South African history, including being the founding place of the South African Native National Congress in 1912, which fought for black South Africans' rights.

Its economy and infrastructure expanded with railway development and gold mining activity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bloemfontein features historical buildings, parks, and cultural sites, reflecting its blend of British, Boer, and indigenous influences.
