Bouchout Castle
Meise, Belgium
Bouchout Castle in Meise, Belgium, was originally built in the 12th century as a fortified stronghold in the young Duchy of Brabant, strategically placed between the County of Flanders and the Berthout family who controlled nearby Grimbergen.
Its square Donjon tower dates back to around 1300 and was built by knight Daniel van Bouchout. Through the centuries, ownership passed among noble families and the castle suffered damage from wars, neglect, and the French Revolution. In the late 17th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance chateau with French ornamental gardens, and later, in 1832, it was renovated in a Neo-Gothic style by Count Amadeus de Beauffort.
From 1879 to 1927, Empress Charlotte of Mexico lived there, leading a reclusive life. Since 1938, the castle and surrounding estate have served as the National Botanic Garden of Belgium, now known as Meise Botanic Garden, with the castle used for meetings, exhibitions, and cultural events. This site combines rich medieval history with botanical significance, making it a notable heritage landmark.
