Brod Fortress is one of the largest and most important historic fortresses in Croatia, located in Slavonski Brod on the banks of the Sava River.

Built by the Archduchy of Austria between 1715 and 1780, it formed part of a vast defensive system designed to protect the Habsburg frontier from the Ottoman Empire. Designed in a distinctive star-shaped layout following the Vauban fortification system, the fortress covered about 33 hectares and was built to accommodate up to 4,000 soldiers and 150 cannons.

Although it was a major military stronghold, it rarely saw direct combat. Today, Brod Fortress is a significant cultural and historical landmark, featuring preserved walls, barracks, courtyards, and defensive structures that reflect 18th-century military architecture. It remains one of the most notable attractions in Slavonski Brod, offering visitors a fascinating insight into Croatia’s borderland history.
