Cape Town City Hall is a grand Edwardian landmark in Cape Town’s city centre, built between 1900 and 1905 and located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope, standing as one of the oldest and most central public spaces in the city. Designed by architects Harry Austin Reid and Frederick George Green from Johannesburg, the building is constructed of honey‑coloured oolitic limestone imported from Bath in England and combines Italian Renaissance and Victorian influences, with a facade that once represented Cape Town as a capital city on equal footing with those of the world. The City Hall originally served as the headquarters of Cape Town’s municipal administration and the seat of its mayor, while its Grand Hall provided the city’s main civic venue for concerts, banquets, boxing, and other cultural and government functions, and it remains home to the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, which performs regularly in the Grand Hall that contains a 3,165‑pipe organ, mosaic floors, stained glass, and a spectacular marble staircase. The tower overlooking the Grand Parade houses a clock and a set of 39 bells modelled on London’s Big Ben, which chime the hours and the Westminster quarters, and the building is widely remembered internationally as the place where Nelson Mandela delivered his first public speech just hours after his release from prison on 11 February 1990, addressed to over 10,000 people from the balcony where a statue of him now stands and where an exhibition dedicated to his life is also displayed.
