Casa - Torre dei Gualtieri
Monza, Italy, Italy
Casa-Torre dei Gualtieri is a rare medieval house-tower located in Piazza Carducci, near the Duomo of Monza.
Built in the second half of the 13th century, it is one of the best-preserved examples of Monza’s medieval civil architecture and reflects a time when powerful families built tower houses as symbols of prestige, influence, and security. The building belonged to the Gualtieri family, an important Guelf family mentioned in 14th-century local chronicles.
Its distinctive tower is integrated into the main structure, and despite alterations made in later centuries, much of its original medieval character has survived. Today, Casa-Torre dei Gualtieri is considered one of Monza’s most significant historic landmarks. Often associated by local tradition with Queen Theodelinda, although it was built centuries after her lifetime, it remains an important reminder of the city’s medieval past.
