Castello Dei Pico
Mirandola, Italy, Italy
Castello dei Pico is a historic castle located in the center of Mirandola, Emilia-Romagna, and was the seat of the powerful Pico family, who ruled the city for about four centuries.
Its origins date back to at least the early 12th century, and over time it evolved from a fortified medieval stronghold into an elegant Renaissance ducal residence. The castle became famous for its strong defenses and was long considered nearly impregnable. It is also closely associated with the renowned philosopher and humanist Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, who was born there in 1463.
During the Renaissance, the complex was enriched with art collections, galleries, and grand architectural additions. Although the castle suffered damage from wars, explosions, and the 2012 Emilia earthquake, it remains one of Mirandola’s most important symbols. Ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve this landmark, which reflects the city’s rich political, cultural, and artistic heritage.
