Castello di Duino
Duino, Italy, Italy
Castello di Duino is a picturesque medieval castle perched on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Trieste in northeastern Italy.
Built in 1389 on the site of older fortifications, including the remains of an 11th-century castle, it has long been an important defensive stronghold and noble residence. The castle is closely associated with the Thurn und Taxis family, who still own it, and it became famous in literary history when the poet Rainer Maria Rilke began writing his celebrated Duino Elegies there in 1912.
Today, visitors are drawn by its historic rooms, beautiful gardens, breathtaking sea views, and rich blend of medieval, cultural, and artistic heritage.
