Castello di Gabbiano is a historic castle located in the Chianti countryside near Mercatale in Val di Pesa, southwest of Florence.

Its origins date back to at least the early 12th century, when a defensive tower was built to protect an important route between Florence and Siena. The estate was also involved in winemaking from an early period, as evidenced by a wine cellar added in 1124. Originally owned by the powerful Bardi family and later by the influential Soderini family, the castle gradually evolved from a fortified stronghold into an elegant noble residence.

Over the centuries, it was expanded into a distinctive quadrangular complex with four round corner towers, blending defensive architecture with Renaissance style. Today, Castello di Gabbiano is best known as a wine estate surrounded by vineyards and olive groves in the heart of Chianti. Combining centuries of history, impressive architecture, and a long tradition of wine production, it remains one of the region’s most notable historic landmarks.
