Castello Malaspina
Fosdinovo, Province of Massa and Carrara, Italy, Italy
Castello Malaspina di Fosdinovo is a striking medieval castle located on a hilltop in the historic Lunigiana region of Tuscany, overlooking the surrounding valleys and coastline.
Dating back to at least the 12th century, it became the main residence of the powerful Malaspina family and remains one of the largest and best-preserved castles in the area. Over the centuries, the fortress evolved from a military stronghold into an elegant noble residence while retaining its imposing towers, walls, and defensive features.
The castle is closely linked to local legends, including the story of the ghost of Bianca Maria Aloisia, and is also associated with the poet Dante Alighieri, who is believed to have stayed with the Malaspina family. Today, the castle is open to visitors and is admired for its historic rooms, furnished interiors, panoramic views, and rich blend of history, architecture, and folklore.
