Castello Normanno del Guiscardo
Caggiano, Province of Salerno, Italy, Italy
Castello Normanno del Guiscardo is a historic fortress that dominates the hilltop town of Caggiano in the province of Salerno.
Dating back to the 9th or 10th century, it was built to defend the settlement and later became associated with the family of the Norman leader Robert Guiscard. Its elevated position, fortified walls, towers, and controlled gateways made it a powerful defensive stronghold. According to local history, the castle was expanded by Guglielmo di Caggiano around 1092 and served as the center of military, political, and daily life within the fortified town.
Over time, as warfare changed, the fortress gradually evolved into a noble residence while retaining much of its medieval character. Today, the castle is one of Caggiano’s most important landmarks and symbols. Restored and partly used for exhibitions, cultural events, and community activities, it offers visitors a glimpse into the town’s Norman heritage and centuries of local history.
