Castelseprio Archaeological Park is an important historic site in Lombardy that preserves the remains of an ancient fortified settlement founded in Roman times and later developed by the Lombards during the Early Middle Ages.

Once a significant military, religious, and administrative center, the settlement was destroyed in 1287 and eventually abandoned. The park contains the ruins of defensive walls, churches, a baptistery, residential buildings, and other structures that reveal centuries of history. Its most famous monument is the Church of Santa Maria foris portas, renowned for its exceptionally rare early medieval frescoes, considered among the most important artworks of their kind in Europe.

Today, Castelseprio Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of “Longobards in Italy: Places of Power.” Surrounded by woodland, it offers visitors a unique combination of archaeology, art, and natural beauty while showcasing the rich cultural heritage of northern Italy.
