Castelvecchio Museum
Verona, Province of Verona, Italy, Italy
Castelvecchio Museum is one of Verona’s most important cultural attractions, housed inside Castelvecchio, a medieval fortress built between 1354 and 1356 by the powerful Scaliger family.
Originally constructed as a defensive castle and residence, the fortress later served various military purposes before being transformed into a museum. The museum contains an outstanding collection of medieval and Renaissance art, including sculptures, paintings, weapons, ceramics, and the famous equestrian statue of Cangrande I della Scala.
Works by artists such as Pisanello, Mantegna, Bellini, Tintoretto, and Veronese are among its highlights. The museum is also celebrated for its innovative restoration by architect Carlo Scarpa between the late 1950s and early 1970s, which carefully blended modern design with the historic castle.
