Groenendaal Castle, located near Brussels in Belgium, was originally part of a priory established in the 14th century by a community of canons seeking solitude outside the city.

The castle complex went through various phases of construction and renovation, including a palace built in 1520 by Philip of Cleves, which served as a hunting lodge for Emperor Charles V and other royalty. Over time, the site evolved with additions such as a chapel and gardens and became a center of spiritual and cultural activity largely influenced by the writings of John of Ruysbroeck, a renowned mystic.

The priory was dissolved in the late 18th century, with many structures demolished, but some buildings including the prior's house and scriptorium have been preserved and restored.
