Castle Liechtenstein
Maria Enzersdorf, Austria
Liechtenstein Castle near Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria was founded around 1130 by Hugo of Liechtenstein as a Romanesque hilltop fortress guarding the southern approaches to Vienna.
After passing out of Liechtenstein ownership in the 13th century, it was repeatedly damaged—first in the Ottoman sieges of Vienna in 1529 and again in 1683—leaving it in ruins for over a century until Prince Johann I bought it back in 1808 and began Romantic‐style restorations. Those early 19th‐century works by Joseph Hardtmuth were followed by a full neo‐Romanesque rebuilding in 1884 under Carl Gangolf Kayser for Prince Johann II, giving the castle its fairytale appearance today.
Still owned by the Princely House of Liechtenstein, the site combines medieval walls and a restored keep with 19th‐century embellishments and is open year‐round for guided tours and cultural events.
