Castle of Brasschaat
Brasschaat, Belgium, Belgium
Castle of Brasschaat in Brasschaat, Belgium, has its origins in the 18th century when the Helhoeve, a farm, was transformed into a pleasure court.
In 1872, Armand Reusens, then mayor of Brasschaat, built a new castle based on French models, replacing the Helhoeve and significantly expanding the estate. The castle was further extended in 1896-1897 with two wings, taking on the appearance it has today.
During World War I, a railway running through the park was built to supply forts but was removed after the war. In 1925-1926, the castle was repurposed for the care of weak and sick children. Since 1949, the castle and its nearly 170-hectare estate have belonged to the municipality of Brasschaat and have been partly managed by Bos en Groen since 1978.
The castle is now a hotel-restaurant and lies within a park, offering a blend of historical charm and recreational space.
