Castle of Louvignies
Soignies, Belgium, Belgium
The Castle of Louvignies, located near Soignies in Belgium's Hainaut Province, has a history dating back to 1389 when it was the seat of a lordship. In 1716, it was acquired by Rodrigo de Peralta, the Governor of Charleroi, who built a castle surrounded by a moat.
The castle underwent modernization in the late 18th century, including the addition of a basement, a tower, and stuccoed rooms reflecting 18th-century tastes. Through marriage, it became the stronghold of the Villegas family in 1798. The estate features an English garden designed in 1834 by C. Th. Petersen, which was later expanded and landscaped extensively by Louis Fuchs in the 1870s under Count Léon de Villegas de Saint-Pierre.
He undertook major renovations between 1870 and 1882, including enlarging the tower, adding wings with state rooms, lounges, and modern amenities, as well as redesigning interiors with period-appropriate furnishings.
The castle retains its Belle Époque charm and houses original furniture and household items from the Villegas family. Its park contains remarkable century-old trees, an icehouse, and a vegetable garden. The castle has also been used as a filming location for various movies, preserving its historical and cultural significance.
Visits are available by appointment, and the site offers a glimpse into noble life during the 19th century with its elegant architecture and serene landscape.
