Verified Coudekeuken

Bruges, Belgium

Coudekeuken, also known as Kasteel Koude Keuken, is a castle located in the Sint-Andries suburb of Bruges, Belgium, first mentioned in records from 1369 under different names related to the estate.

The castle features an oval moat and was originally a noble estate with an upper and lower court. It was substantially rebuilt around 1900 in a historicist style by architect Charles De Wulf, commissioned by Joseph Kervyn de Lettenhove, while retaining its classic 17th-century Renaissance facade in parts.

During the 1940 Battle of Belgium, Coudekeuken served as the Belgian army’s military headquarters and witnessed key wartime discussions involving King Leopold III. After World War II, the castle became municipal property, serving as a recreational area and restaurant before being sold to a private owner in 2004.

The castle grounds include a neoclassical grand salon, a gatehouse, and a park with an early 20th-century farmstead, reflecting its layered history and architectural evolution.
