The Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng Province, South Africa, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 50 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg, renowned for its vast concentration of early human fossils and archaeological sites. Covering around 47,000 hectares, it features a complex system of limestone caves where many significant hominid remains have been found, including the famous 2.3-million-year-old Australopithecus africanus skull known as "Mrs. Ples."

The area has yielded more than 850 hominid fossil specimens, making it one of the world's richest fossil sites for understanding human evolution. The site supports the "Out of Africa" theory, which suggests that modern humans originated in Africa before spreading globally.

Visitors can explore the Sterkfontein Caves, Maropeng Visitor Centre, and several other excavation sites that provide insights into early human history with exhibits of fossils, stone tools, and evolutionary timelines.
