Despot's Gate
Belgrade, Serbia, Serbia
Despot's Gate, also called Despotovac Kapija or the Eastern Gate of Belgrade Fortress, is a well-preserved 15th-century medieval entrance in Kalemegdan Park, built during the reign of Despot Stefan Lazarević who made Belgrade his capital from 1404 to 1427. Positioned alongside the Castellan Tower as the main access to the Upper Town, it features double ramparts with inner and outer gates designed for defense, thick stone walls, and strategic overlooks, representing one of the few intact segments of Stefan's fortress expansions against Ottoman threats. Damaged in World War I bombings and partially rebuilt in 1938, it now stands as a cultural monument with a modern statue of Despot Stefan unveiled in 1982, offering visitors insight into Serbia's late medieval history.
