Ditsong Sammy Marks Museum
Donkerhoek, South Africa, South Africa
Ditsong Sammy Marks Museum is a historic house museum at Zwartkoppies Hall near Donkerhoek, east of Pretoria, preserving the home and estate of Samuel “Sammy” Marks, a Lithuanian-born entrepreneur who became a leading figure in South Africa’s mining, industrial and agricultural development between about 1880 and 1920.
The large Victorian mansion, completed in the 1880s, is notable because about ninety-eight percent of its furniture, ornaments and household contents are original to the Marks family, so guided tours offer an unusually authentic glimpse of an affluent late nineteenth‑century household, with period rooms, silverware, glassware, artworks and personal artefacts presented much as they were when the family lived there.
Managed by DITSONG: Museums of South Africa, the site functions as both a cultural-history museum and country estate attraction just outside the city, open to visitors most days of the week with set tour times that focus on Marks’s life story and his contribution to South Africa’s economic and social history.
