Domein Spokenhof
Boechout, Belgium
Domein Spokenhof is a historic estate located in Boechout, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, situated at the corner of Borsbeeksesteenweg and Spokenhofstraat. The estate centers around a traditional country house built in the early 17th century in brick and sandstone style, with its ridge running parallel to the street.
The property is also known by alternative names including Capenbergh and Labistratenhof, with "Spokenhof" believed to be a corruption of "Sompekenhof".
The estate has deep historical roots dating back to medieval times, originally standing on the territory of the mother court of Scille, while the opposite Capenbergh farm stood on the territory of Sombeke, both mother courts mentioned as early as 1362. In 1556, both territories came under the same ownership and remained dependent on the feudal court of Sombeke, which was connected to Sint-Baafs Abbey in Ghent and the lord of Boechout.
The current house was built around 1610 by Geerbrand Fredericx, as evidenced by the date on a wall anchor that was later moved to the eastern side wall of an addition.
Historical records from 1595 mention the property as a "speelhuis" (pleasure house) with farm, called Capenbergh, which had been confiscated from previous owners and sold at public auction at the Vrijdagmarkt in Antwerp to Joos van der Steene, who then sold it to Fredericx in 1598.
The property later passed to the noble Roose family, as indicated by the coat of arms above a dormer window referring to knight Albert Roose who inherited the estate. The rectangular domain is surrounded by a moat and hedges, creating a protected enclosure opposite the Capenbergh farm.
