The Dorpshuis Le Roux Museum, more commonly known as the Le Roux Townhouse, is a historic sandstone residence and museum in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, that forms part of the CP Nel Museum complex and showcases life during the ostrich feather boom of the early 1900s. Built in 1909 by farmer J.H.J. Le Roux and designed by architect Charles Bullock, the house was intended as an elegant “feather palace” for an ostrich baron, combining various stylistic features to create a sense of complexity, playfulness, and luxury, with a notable Art Nouveau stained‑glass panel as one of its unique decorative elements. Declared a National Monument in 1980, the townhouse is the only feather‑boom period house in South Africa that is open to the general public, and it is furnished with authentic Victorian‑era furniture, Cape silver, valuable porcelain, and period pieces that illustrate the wealth and lifestyle of Le Roux’s family, who entertained figures such as Cecil John Rhodes, the Prince of Wales, and writer H. Rider Haggard. Visitors who buy a ticket to the CP Nel Museum are included in the Le Roux Townhouse, and the museum complex itself is named after Colonel Charles Paul Leonard Nel, a local businessman and collector who donated his private collection to establish the museum, which today also features exhibits such as the Ostrich Hall, Street Scene, Military, Synagogue, and transport displays that together tell the story of Oudtshoorn’s ostrich industry, cultural identity, and Klein Karoo heritage.
