Dvigrad Ruins are the remains of a once-thriving medieval town near Kanfanar in Croatia’s Istria region.

The town's name, meaning “two castles,” refers to its origins as two neighboring settlements, and it was an important strategic and religious center from the early Middle Ages. Over the centuries, Dvigrad experienced periods of prosperity under various rulers, including the Venetians. However, outbreaks of plague and malaria, along with wars and economic decline, gradually caused its population to leave.

By the early 18th century, the town had been completely abandoned. Today, the impressive ruins include sections of defensive walls, towers, streets, and the remains of the Basilica of St. Sophia. As one of the best-preserved abandoned medieval towns in Croatia, Dvigrad offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into medieval life and a unique atmosphere amid the Istrian countryside.
